Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (SARPE)

Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (SARPE)

The SARPE procedure is a surgical procedure that is used to widen the maxilla in the transverse plane by opening the midpalatal suture using an orthodontic appliance.   Other similar, but less invasive procedures, such as the DOME (distraction osteogenesis maxillary expansion) procedure have gained popularity.

Indications for a SARPE Include:

  • To correct unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite
  • Increasing the maxillary transverse width
  • Alleviating dental crowding
  • Reducing excessively prominent visible buccal corridors when smiling
  • Overcoming resistance to expansion when orthopedic maxillary expansion has failed
